amateur electrical engineering student & an avid artist

a third year update

>> A few months ago, I made this blog in hopes of documenting my journey of electrical engineering.

(and it also fills out the very empty resume that I have)

What happened since then?

If you are an avid LinkedIn demon, then you might’ve seen my updates to my status.

Back up, back up…

>> So I’m sure we all know how horrible the job market is right now for students.

When fall came around and I moved back to school with no job offer, I assumed I’d have to wait again for next term for a chance.

..until this happened.

Part 1: The Bait

On a random school day (1 week into school), I received an (essentially) email that read:

we have an interview for you tomorrow at 8:30 AM. you want? (lol)

<– my genuine reaction

YES I WANT. SO of COURSE I said yes. If I can drag my half awake corpse to 8:30 lectures, I can do an interview in less than 24 hours.

Part 2: The Prep

>> I high-key forgot which job this was for, and after some research, I found it was for the a CO OP for a transit engineering assistant for the Fall Term @ OC Transpo.

I don’t know how buses work. I don’t even know how a CAR works.

Seeing this, I spent the rest of the day prepping interview questions (via Reddit lol) and hoped for the very best.

I guess if anything, I learned how 3-phase motors can be more efficient in delivering power.

Part 3: The Interview

>> Pro tip: If you want to ace an interview at 8:30 AM, maybe don’t sleep at 11:30 PM.

The process went as much as I expected: I had a 7 interview questions; 3 about my degree and 4 behavioral questions.

My experience in yapping from my McMaster Tour Guide job definitely came in handy.

For a first interview, it was pretty in-depth. But very much like any other interview you’d come across.

While I asked my questions in the end, I thought I did pretty well. Just like I felt for every interview so far.

and how every single time it will inevitably send a rejection in the mail 2 days later.

Part 4: The Aftermath

>>…So I got an offer 4 hours later.

* Surprised pikachu face *

I’ll spare you the administration that came afterwards, but to think… I got employed… in this economy…

Almost enough to make a grown woman cry.

if only it didn’t take 300 tries

After I submitted my paperwork, I packed my things and I skedaddled back home, where my employment would be waiting.

Thoughts?

>> Overwhelming feelings of gratitude and overwhelm.

As of writing this, it would’ve been a month since I started working at OC Transpo. This was a pretty long update, but I think this milestone warranted this CHUNK of a post.

Moral of the story??

Keep trying over and over and over and over. Better than MAYBE getting a job than not getting one at all.

WOOOOOO INSPIRATIONAL YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH–

And frankly, apply out of spite. Spite is a GREAT motivator.
